My spouse, Olivia, has been talking about Ustica for many years. An island situated in the Tyrrhenian Sea–so tiny, so starkly beautiful, so still, it’s a wonder it can hold all of its tragic history. “You’ve got to come to Ustica, Bridget,” Olivia would say. “Then, you’ll see. Then, you’ll understand.”
From these droplets of conversation, Ustica became a magnet for me, a silent siren, born from my desire to see and understand much, but mainly this Genovese I had married. The Genovese who then became a Napoletana, visiting the mythical Ustica many times, a lifetime before moving to America and marrying me.
“We can go in July,” Olivia said. “They have running races then. You will love it.” In fact, we had enjoyed running together many times, even braving a very technically challenging ultra-marathon a couple of years back. Sometimes Olivia would read to me about races from years prior but those words were all only figments.
Until yesterday.
Yesterday, we ran the first offour races. A 6K, beginning and ending at the Hotel Ustica Punta Spalmatore. 12 of us loosely waited at the starting line until Anna Russolillo, the hotel owner and dear friend, counted us down. Tre, due, uno…And we were off, running the first stretch, where six puppies who, despite their adorableness, aggressively leapt at my feet.
We turned and ran toward the drastic blue, where one could stare forever, out to that farthest farthest point. With each pounding footfall, I could feel the distance between me and the Earth melt as though by the pelting Sole Usticese. Perhaps I could see a little clearer. Maybe I would understand a little deeper.

«Possiamo andare a luglio», disse Olivia.
Fino a ieri.
