Invitations for the feast day celebration – San Bartolomeo
Dear members and friends of the society,
Invitations for the feast day celebration on Sunday, August 24th have all been sent and reservations are being received. The deadline for signing up is Monday, August 18th so please start making your arrangements soon. You can find more details and get the reservation form from the society website.
In line with the feast day, The Jefferson Parish Library will be having a lecture on the life of San Bartolomeo on Tuesday August 12th 7:00pm at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W Napoleon Av in Metairie, LA. Dr Cyril Lagvenac will be the featured speaker and I will do a brief presentation of the history of our society. The society banner will also proudly be on display. I expect the lecture will be recorded and I will send out a link when it becomes available. Click here to see the flyer for the event.
An article on the Stato Civile of Ustica is now available HERE at the society website. When I started transcribing these records in 1999, it was all done from microfilm at a Mormon temple. My grasp of deciphering Italian hand-written script was weak at best and I had little understanding of even what to expect in the records. My approach was to only record the most basic genealogical information as quickly as possible so as to get the most data for the limited time I had. This was done on paper and then later I would type the data into a computer system. Needless to say there was lots of room for errors, not to mention the data I ignored in my rush to get the work done. Fast forward to today and I can now leisurely work with the Stato Civile online from my laptop in my lazy-boy at home. And, my Italian and script recognition has improved greatly in the past 25 years. I’ve already re-transcribed the early 1820s and the later data from the 1900s with the plan of ultimately doing all years in between. My approach now is to transcribe into English the data as closely to how it appears in the actual record. This should make it easier for someone to look at an actual image and follow along with the translation. I still avoid the redundant legalese but am now picking up event dates, ages, occupations and addresses, and I’m recording information of the many witnesses to the acts. Legally I cannot include the actual images in the family charts and I’m hesitant to rely on links which can change at the source and break the link, and which often only put you in the general vicinity of the act of interest. It’s not a perfect methodology but still a good way to get the most from what we have available to us. The article gives a peak into life on Ustica in 1877 as well as all the nerdy genealogical details.
Cheers!
