In some of these pictures we are standing in the Giovanni Basilone Piazetta , named for a great W.W.11 hero in America !! He was the only Marine to receive the Medal of HOnor and the Navy Cross in the war !!! He died in the Battle of Iwo Jima. You can read all about Basilone in Wikpedia., on the web.
Chris Caravella is the head of the CSBA in America, llves in New Orleans and was visiting in San Diego with his family.
The staff of Hotel Diana met me at the ferry and took me to the hotel. Hotel Diana is lovely! The owners are very hospitable and kind hosts — they took great care of me. The hotel is in a great location with a beautiful swimming pool where I spent many hours. I highly recommend Hotel Diana for all Ustica visitors. The hotel even made lentil soup from Ustica lentils just for me! I went to the center of town and wandered the streets from the port to the centre. I visited the beautiful church which holds statues to the major local saints including Saints Rosalia and Bartolomeo.
The next morning, my cousin Pietro Bertucci, came to the hotel to pick me up. I quickly learned you never knew what adventures were in store with Pietro. He took me all over the island! The first day we did a tour to help my get my bearings on Ustica. We went to the old fort that also houses ruins dating back to 1,000 years BC. There were many men working hard to replace the safety railings and to clean up this historic site for summer visitors. [ id=18335 w=320 h=240 float=right]
Later, we stopped at the home of another Pietro Bertucci where we picked mulberries (which were delicious) and met Angelo Bertucci. As we met, we just kept pointing at each other and saying “Tutti Bertucci!” Pietro demonstrated his outdoor pizza and bread oven and said that on my next visit, we will make pizza. In my five days on Ustica, Pietro made sure that I met many Bertuccis – including lovely Licia who welcomed me into her home, Lia and kind Bartola who let us pick peaches from her wonderful peach trees and gave us tasty tomatoes and cucumber. We also visited many of Pietro’s friends who were always welcoming and caring.

L’ancora “giovane” Classe di “Ferro” del 1963 il 22 Giugno si è incontrata all’Hotel Diana per festeggiare assieme i 50 anni.
E’ stata una giornata all’insegna dell’amicizia e dei ricordi, ma anche di qualche progetto futuro.
Tra piatti tipici locali, brindisi, aneddoti e tante foto ricordo, la giornata ha regalato a tutti i partecipanti piacevoli momenti.
Un momento particolare da ricordare con emozione è stato quando Pinuccetto ha spento le candeline del suo 50° compleanno.
Hanno allietato la serata la presenza della Maestra Mariuccia Giuffria ed il Professore Vincenzo Lo Forti

…sai che nonostante tutto , ti vorrò sempre bene…ma se davvero senti quello che hai scritto, allora forse prima dovresti riparare a chi tu per primo la luce l’hai fatta intravedere e poi l’hai negata spegnendo la luce….comunque sia buon viaggio ….ti auguro tutto quel che sai…..ciao p.p.

E’ stata un’ esperienza meravigliosa per me perche’ ho l’isola di Ustica nel mio cuore. Mi sento piu’ stretta di prima con la gente di Ustica. Grazie sempre per l’invito. Un giorno che non dimentichero’ mai!
Ringraziamo nostra Cugina Maria Bertucci Compagno per l’ottima e splendida organizzazione e per come è riuscita, in poco tempo, a coinvolgere tanta gente con radici usticesi ed altri innamorati di Ustica (Bertucci, Compagno, Marfrè, Picone, Mancuso, Caravella ecc.)
Grazie ancora Maria… non piangere… ritorneremo presto…

Pietro and Pina Bertucci, Salvatore and Maria Compagno paid a visit to the Island of Catalina, along with California Hosts, Ron and Marlene Robershaw (Manfre). We were greeted at the port of Catalina by friend of Marlene, Chuck Liddell. Chuck was there to take us on an Island Tour. Chuck is owner of Odyssey Charter Tours, also he owns Liddell Talent Management Co. where Marlene has had contact with many musicians for the Ramona Concert Association.
Catalina is very much like Ustica ,but twice as big and twice as many people. The Port and Island geography are very similar. On the Island tour we met up with a wild Buffalo and also saw an American Bald Eagle at a bird sanctuary. We visited the small airport that Chuck Liddell’s father had built before W.W. 11. We met with the City Manager and Chief Financial Officer to discuss the possibility of Catalina and Ustica being Sister City’s. The idea is being investigated.
In the pictures you will see many views of the beautiful Island, in the day and in the night. Like Ustica, the Island of Catalina lies 35 miles out to sea. Tourists are greeted with a lot of brochures at the dock and also a nearby Information Booth with someone there to answer questions and help.
The big round building is the historic Casino, no gambling, but where the Movie Stars and rich of the 30’s would come to dance with the Big Bands. The downstairs is a lovely theatre with movies.
We were all very interested in the colorful and quaint homes that line the streets of the main city, Avalon. There was a multitude of Italian Restaurants. The city celebrates their 100th anniversary this year.
