Wow! I’m just finally catching up after the weekend of activities in early April commemorating the visit of our Usticesi cousins from the West Coast. Pictures from the 3 scheduled events are now posted for your enjoyment at www.ustica.org/san_bartolomeo .
We had an incredible weekend of picture-perfect weather. The festivities began with a tour of the San Bartolomeo Society tomb in Metairie Cemetery followed by sweets and coffee at Brocato’s Italian Ice Cream. We then hopped on the streetcar and headed to the French Quarter Fest for an afternoon of food, fun and music. The Picnic on Saturday drew at least 90 people and our chefs did not disappoint. Great Cajun, Creole and Italian dishes were in abundance and no one was left wanting. This was truly a community event and I can’t thank enough our CSBA members and friends of the society for all contributing to make it such a memorable day. After lunch, we drew door prizes and Fred Laurice led us in an open-mike discussion in which everyone could recount their family history and explain what their Usticese heritage means to them. Sunday, the Giardina family was our host and we had a spectacular meal that featured Osso Buco, Italian Sausage and much more. I know I enjoyed meeting dozens of people, so I’m sure our guests were overwhelmed by the outpouring of hospitality and friendship.
This year has truly been incredible for the CSBA. In just 7 months we have grown to over 70 members and hosted many successful events. I think my Aunt Gerry summed it up best when she said of the picnic “I felt like I could talk to anyone and it was as if I had known them my entire life”. In that spirit, I invite all of you who are not yet members to join us in our mission to reach out to our community and share our history, family stories and culture, and the incredible allure of the island of Ustica.
