Dalla California Wendy (Laurice) Horton ci informa che il fratello Fred Laudicella all’età di 91 anni è passato ad altra vita

Dear Pietro,

It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that my big brother Fred Laurice (of the California Lauricella family) has passed away. He was 91 years old. I want to let you know as Fred loved everything about Ustica. The family history, the beautiful Island, the wonderful people. He pretty much kept the family up to date on anything new that he heard about the Island. He loved his visits to Ustica as did the Lauricella’s who visited in 2005.

His wife of 63 years, Kathie told me he had been very weak for a short time. He went grocery shopping and fell and struck his head. He was maintained at the hospital on life support for about 4 days without improvement. On February 15, he was removed from life support and passed away peacefully.

È con grande tristezza che devo comunicarvi che il mio fratello maggiore Fred Laurice (della famiglia California Lauricella) è venuto a mancare. Aveva 91 anni. Voglio farti sapere che Fred amava tutto di Ustica. La storia della famiglia, la bellissima isola, le persone meravigliose. Ha praticamente tenuto aggiornata la famiglia su qualsiasi cosa avesse sentito sull’isola. Amava le sue visite a Ustica così come i Lauricella che l’hanno visitata nel 2005.

Sua moglie Kathie da 63 anni mi ha detto che era stato molto debole per un breve periodo. È andato a fare la spesa, è caduto e ha battuto la testa. È stato mantenuto in ospedale in supporto vitale per circa 4 giorni senza miglioramenti. Il 15 febbraio è stato rimosso dal supporto vitale ed è deceduto pacificamente.

What fun! The two meetings honoring the visit of Pietro Bettucci, his wife Pina and Maria Compagno were very successful. Marlene Robershaw hosted the southern California meeting at her beautiful mountainside home in Ramona, and Rosa Ferrigno hosted the meeting in Mt. View with the assistance of Karen Hartley. Each was a great event in its own distinct way. In looking at the photos, the beautiful surroundings and spaciousness of Marlene’s home added a bit of “elegance” to the party! While the informality at Rosa’s home gave the distinct feeling of an “old fashioned Italian family gathering,” complete with a number of native Italians speaking the language!

We were all thrilled with the attendance at each venue. Marlene must have had almost 60 people at her home, while we hosted some 40 in Mt. View. In all, we all got to meet and visit with a lot of Ustica descendants during those two weekends. And it was great to see some folks whom we hadn’t seen for a while, as well as those who were joining us for the very first time. “Benvenuto.” (Welcome!)

Our thanks to all who participated! And special thanks to all who brought such delicious food, and to those who helped in so many ways to make those two weekends so memorable!

And a special thanks to Chris and Pam and to Loella Barilleau and Paul for making the long trek to California from New Orleans. We trust that you had a great time and took reports back to NOLA that the “western Usticesi” are alive and kicking!
