Here’s wishing everyone a happy San Bartolomeo feast day. Actually it’s not until the 24th but those of us in the NO area celebrate today at a mass and lunch and we keep all of you who cannot attend in our hearts and minds on this special day. Copied below is the invocation and opening address that I will give at the lunch. We’ll also be sure to post some photos at ustica.org in the next week.

Invocation:

Oh great San Bartolomeo, protector of Ustica and all of her descendants through out the world. We gather today in your honor and ask your continued blessings for the beloved island of our forefathers, for our society and for all our friends here today.

Viva San Bartolomeo!

Opening Address:

Welcome to the 132nd celebration of the San Bartolomeo Feast Day by the Congregazione di San Bartolomeo Apostolo. The proper celebration of this feast day was one of the primary reason this group was organized in 1879 and we are very proud that after a few years of inactivity, we are continuing this tradition today. In a way today is a test to see we could match the enthusiasm and participation of the organization under the leadership of Peter and Dolly Bertucci for the past 4 decades. With about 90 members and nearly 100 here today, I’m proud to say that things are looking great for the society and we have a bright future of growth and outreach ahead of us.

On each table, is a print of photo taken on Ustica just two nights ago. It is a view of the main street of Ustica taken from the piazza in front of the church and you can see that the town is prepared for the big celebration this week with a canopy of lights overhead and the cafes overflowing with seating into the street, now cleared of cars and traffic. The internet site (www.usticasape.it ) where the picture originated is run by Pietro Bertucci and has become “the” social networking site for people from Ustica, tourists and Usticesi descendants worldwide. I encourage all of you to visit so you can experience the celebration there and also post comments and photos of our celebration here. It’s a great way to exchange ideas and Pietro is to be commended for the tremendous amount of work invested in maintaining the site. We may have the opportunity to thank him in person. He and his wife Pina are planning to be here in November.

I’d like to introduce the board of the CSBA. The executive board is composed of myself, Chris Caravella – President, Christopher Skinner – Vice President, (Christopher was unfortunately called out of town for work and can’t be here with us today), Judy Fallo Myer – Treasurer and Ken Boe – Secretary. The Committee Chairs are Kim Broussard – Media, Loella Barilleau – Outreach, Larie Tedesco – Membership and Chris Bertucci – Events. Our Member-at-Large is JoEva Picone Flettrich. Together these 9 people form the voting members of the Board of Directors. In addition, we also have a special appointment to represent the CSBA at meetings of the Italian American Federation and other organizations dedicated to the Italian American community. This is Matthew DelBuono – CSBA Representative. These are the folks that make everything happen and they’ve done a great job of dedicating their time and talent to making this a successful and enjoyable society. Thank you all.

Also today we have some special guests that I’d like to call your attention to. From the greater Italian American community, we have Sal Serio – President of the Cefalutana Society, Joe Distefano – Executive Vice President of the Italian American Federation of the Southeast and Barbara Picone DeSoto, President of the Jefferson Genealogical Society and also a CSBA member. We also have a few members that have traveled quite a ways to be here with us today. From California, we have Mike and Shirley Taranto Francis. Shirley also has rounded up a large group of Taranto and Fallo family members from the Mississippi Gulf Coast and we welcome them all here today also. Also we have Bill Palmisano in from West Virginia. Thanks for making that special effort to be here. And I’ve also been told that today is the 45th wedding anniversary of members, Chuck and Diane Henry. Congratulations and thanks for being here with us on your special day.

And, always saving the best for last, we have Peter and Dolly Bertucci, who together lead this organization for 46 years. With this being our first year in office, we thought it appropriate to honor them with some gifts in appreciation of their faithful service to the Usticesi community in America. To Peter we present a plaque in honor of his service as Presient of the CSBA and to Dolly a beautiful silver pendant of San Bartolomeo. Special thanks goes to JoEva Flettrich, CSBA Member-at-Large, for arranging this.

So now, let’s all enjoy good company and our great meal here at Andrea’s. We still have a few events planned for this year. We’re talking about maybe a presentation on Ustica as a vacation destination and a genealogy seminar in conjunction with the New Orleans Public Library, and a large party for Pietro and Pina Bertucci who, as I mentioned, plan on making the trip to New Orleans in November. In realtà non è il 24 ma ognuno di noi nel Nord Ovest celebra con Messa e pranzo e teniamo nei nostri cuori e nelle nostre menti tutti coloro che non possono essere presenti in questo giorno speciale. Oh grande San Bartolomeo, protettore di Ustica e di tutti i suoi discendenti nel mondo. Ci riuniamo oggi in tuo onore e chiediamo la tua continua benedizione per l’isola amata dei nostri antenati, per la nostra società e per tutti i nostri amici qui oggi.

Discorso di apertura:

Benvenuti alla celebrazione della 132a Festa di San Bartolomeo da parte della Congregazione di San Bartolomeo Apostolo. La tipica celebrazione dell’odierna festa era una delle ragioni principali per cui questo gruppo fu organizzato nel 1879 e noi siamo molto orgogliosi che dopo qualche anno di inattività, oggi stiamo continuando questa tradizione. In un certo senso oggi è un test per constatare che potremmo unire l’entusiasmo e la partecipazione delle organizzazione sotto la guida di Pietro e Dolly Bertucci per gli ultimi 4 decenni. Con circa 90 membri e quasi 100 qui oggi, sono orgoglioso di dire che le cose si presentano con un ottimo aspetto per la società e abbiamo un futuro luminoso di crescita e di sensibilizzazione davanti a noi.

Su ogni tavolo, è una stampa della foto scattata a Ustica appena due notti fa. Si tratta di una vista sulla strada principale di Ustica presi dalla piazza davanti alla chiesa e si può vedere che il paese è preparato per la grande festa di questa settimana con un baldacchino di luce artificiale e il caffè traboccante di posti a sedere in mezzo alla strada, sgombro di auto e traffico. Il sito Internet www.usticasape.it gestito da Pietro Bertucci, è la fonte da cui è tratta la foto, ed è diventato “il” sito di social networking per persone provenienti da Ustica, i turisti e Usticesi discendenti in tutto il mondo.

Incoraggio tutti voi a visitarlo in modo da poter sperimentare la festa e inviare lì anche commenti e le foto della nostra celebrazione qui.
E ‘un ottimo modo per scambiare idee e Pietro è da lodare per l’enorme quantità di lavoro investito nel mantenimento del sito.
Si può avere l’occasione per ringraziarlo di persona. Lui e sua moglie Pina hanno in programma di essere qui a novembre.

Vorrei presentare il consiglio di amministrazione della CSBA. Il comitato esecutivo è composto da me stesso, Chris Caravella – Presidente, Christopher Skinner – Vice Presidente (Christopher è stato purtroppo chiamato fuori città per lavoro e non può essere qui con noi oggi), Judy Fallo Myer – Tesoriere e Ken Boe – Segretario. I presidenti di commissione sono Broussard Kim – Media, Outreach Barilleau Loella -, Tedesco Larie – Composizione e Bertucci Chris – Eventi. Nostri membro-at-Large è Picone Flettrich JoEva.

L’insieme di queste 9 persone forma i membri votanti del Consiglio di Amministrazione. In aggiunta, abbiamo anche un appuntamento speciale per rappresentare il CSBA alle riunioni della Federazione italiana americana e di altre organizzazioni dedicate alla comunità italiana americana. Questo è Matteo Del Buono – Rappresentante CSBA. Questa è la gente che contribuisce a realizzare il tutto e che hanno fatto un grande lavoro nel dedicare il loro tempo e talento per rendere questa una società di successo l e apprezzabile.

Anche oggi abbiamo alcuni ospiti speciali che vorrei richiamare alla vostra attenzione. Della grande comunità italiana americana abbiamo Sal Serio – Presidente della Società Cefalutana, Joe Distefano – Vice Presidente Esecutivo della Federazione italiana americana del sud-est e Barbara Picone DeSoto, Presidente della Società Genealogica Jefferson e anche un membro CSBA.

Abbiamo anche alcuni membri che hanno viaggiato un bel po’ per essere qui con noi oggi. Dalla California, abbiamo Mike e Shirley Taranto Francesco. Shirley ha raggruppato anche un folto gruppo di familiari Taranto e Fallo dalla costa del Golfo lungo il Mississippi e li accogliamo tutti qui anche oggi.

Inoltre abbiamo Bill Palmisano dal West Virginia. Grazie ad operare tale sforzo particolare per essere qui.

E mi è stato detto che oggi è anche il 45° anniversario di nozze dei soci, Chuck e Diane Henry. Complimenti e grazie per essere qui con noi in questo vostro giorno per voi speciale.

E, sempre conservando il meglio per ultimo, abbiamo Pietro e Dolly Bertucci, che insieme guidano questa organizzazione da 46 anni. Con questo essendo il nostro primo anno in carica, abbiamo ritenuto opportuno onorarli con alcuni doni in segno di apprezzamento del loro fedele servizio alla comunità degli Usticesi in America. Per Peter vi presentiamo una targa in onore del suo servizio come President del CSBA e Dolly un ciondolo d’argento bella di San Bartolomeo. Un ringraziamento speciale va a JoEva Flettrich, CSBA membro-at-Large, per la realizzazione di ciò.

Così ora gioiamo tutti di questa buona compagnia e del nostro grande pranzo qui a casa di Andrea. Abbiamo ancora alcuni eventi previsti per quest’anno. Stiamo parlando di una probabile presentazione su Ustica come una destinazione di vacanza ed un seminario di genealogia in collaborazione con la New Orleans Public Library ed una grande festa per Pietro e Pina Bertucci che, come ho detto, programmano di Grazie a tutti per il vostro sostegno e la partecipazione.
