Attached is another photo taken in 1969 of my Grandpa Giuseppe Bertucci (age 83) in his garden. Like all Italians he loved his garden.
This photo was taken at their home in Milbrae, Ca (South of San Francisco).
When they moved in to their home the first thing he did was plant his garden.
[ id=1382 w=320 h=240 float=center]Their was a small front yard and it had lawn. He was planning on digging it all up and plant a garden. My father had to stop him. A lawn needs water, but Grandpa felt that why water something you can’t eat.
The next three taken in 2002 of our Great Granddaughter Bailey (she is 2-1/2).
[ id=1380 w=160 h=120 float=center] [ id=1381 w=160 h=120 float=center]My back yard does not get much sun, but I try to grow tomatoes. Bailey loves my tomato garden and only want to eat them from the vine. I know my Grandpa would have loved seeing this.

Your website brings back a lot of memories, especially the photo’s. I’ve been going over my photos and I have many that need to be shared.
I’m attaching three taken in 1941 during many of our trips to Pedro Point. It is South of San Francisco and reminded my Grandparents and Father of the shores of Ustica. Giuseppe Bertucci, Rosina Palmisano-Bertucci and me Angelo Bertucci. My father took the photos. I enjoyed the trips as a child, especially getting and eating the sea urchins. The photos show the rizzi’s we picked. I sure miss those days.

I’m sure you heard about the April 9, 2010 picnic in NOLA that a number West Coast Ustica cousins are planning to attend. Gerry and I will be going. I’m looking forward to the trip. We are thinking of an Ustica trip in 2011.

Agostino …. detto anche Armandino o Nuccio…. quanti bei ricordi leggendo fra queste tue righe!!!! È vero.. il Carnevale di quei tempi era un modo per stare insieme, per conoscersi, per farsi “ziti”; ho pochi ricordi…ma da alcune foto dei miei (che se ricordo dove sono) te le farò vedere, si notavano le sedie a giro i muri della camera dove le donne prendevano posto in attesa di essere invitate a ballare… e le maschere che entravano in casa… che tentavamo di riconoscere, ma erano così ben mascherati che non riuscivi a carpire nulla… Bei tempi si… adesso il vestirsi in maschera non si usa più.. questa usanza ormai si è persa, i ragazzi non hanno bisogno di incontrarsi e stare insieme per quell’occasione… s’incontrano e stanno insieme quando vogliono… si sta bene in casa davanti la tv.. a farsi comandare dal telecomando…

E’ sempre bello leggerli, ma questa sera più che mai……..mi sono emozionata tantissimo a leggere l’articolo sul Carnevale di una volta FANTASTICO!!!!!!!!!!!! Le stesse cose mi racconta il mio papà (Bartolo Licciardi, figghiu ‘da za’ Anciulina a Piripicchia e du zu Mimi u mpagghiatu o nacti).
Eravate proprio in gamba e capaci di divertirvi ed essere felici con meno di niente. Proprio oggi, mentre preparavo “i chiacchiri” parlavo con una mia coetanea e le dicevo che noi siamo proprio dei buoni a nulla e che abbiamo perso tutte le tradizioni, Ustica è un mortorio……….

le tue memorie del Carnevale usticese sono grandi. Mi fa piacere che sei cosi informa quando racconti le cose usticesi: Stasera dato che è la vigilia del martedì grasso, ti ricordo quando nel periodo di Carnevale si andava a casa di Gaetano Calderaro a giocare e mangiare e ballare… Sono sempre vivi quei ricordi…
