Ustica sape

E’ un inverno fine anni 60, durante il periodo finale di transizione fra l’economia povera ma stabile dei confinati e quella più promettente ma ancora allo stato acerbo del turismo . Ed era già in atto la rivoluzione culturale del ’68 : meno inibizioni e più liberalismo .

Non ero ad Ustica ma i rumori dei malcontenti arrivavano fino a Palermo e mi ricordo di questo particolare :

Le proteste attirarono l’attenzione nazionale tanto che andò ad Ustica la troupe del Telegiornale ( a quei tempi c’era solo un canale RAI ) e alcuni inviati di una stazione radio siciliana .

Per come si legge da uno dei cartelloni esposti dai manifestanti ad Ustica non c’era più la Farmacia , ma durante la trasmissione del Telegiornale il Farmacista Dr. Butturini da Verona fu testimone di un appello accorato di Totuccio Caserta ( Sigaro ), si commosse , fece le valigie, venne ad Ustica ,apri una Farmacia e ci rimase fino alla fine dei suoi giorni .

I trasporti erano il problema principale . In alcuni cartelloni si leggono le richieste : ” Piroscafo più veloce e 2 volte al giorno ” , ” collegamenti con Napoli ” ,” Elicotteri e aliscafi giornalieri ” . Di aliscafi a quei tempi si parlava appena ma le richieste furono lungimiranti e quantomeno presagenti : il collegamento 2 volte al giorno e con Napoli ( con gli aliscafi ) divenne realtà tempo dopo .

Un altro cartello dice :” fateci seppellire i nostri morti ” , ed entro alcuni anni furono costruiti i loculi del lato sud del cimitero . Come si vede dalle foto alla protesta parteciparono tutti : uomini ,donne e giovani . A quei tempi non c’erano i giubbotti imbottiti capaci di riparare dal vento e dal freddo come quelli attuali ,tutti indossavano una giacca che in realtà non era sufficiente ( anche se sotto la camicia c’erano 2-3 maglie di cotone o lana ) ; d’inverno si pativa letteralmente il freddo ma fortunatamente i corpi erano abituati e immunizzati .

In un cartello si legge :” vogliamo ultimato il porto ” , in un altro : ” cacciate via i passeri ( che danneggiano l’agricoltura ) , e in un’altro : ” risolvete la crisi per sempre ” , e ” vogliamo più acqua ” , Insomma fu una protesta su tanti fronti .

La verità e che non tutto fu cosi facile e automatico per come potrebbe sembrare da questa narrazione , fu una lotta, ci furono anche piccole scaramucce con le forze dell’ordine e alcuni Usticesi, in seguito ad una inchiesta della Magistratura , dovettero essere interrogati e furono denunziati ( ma alla fine scagionati ) . E’ il prezzo che si paga per le conquiste sociali !

Una cosa che ricordo benissimo fu che la popolazione era unita , non fu una protesta contro L’Amm.ne Locale ma contro il Sistema che stava ignorando le esigenze dell’isola proiettata verso il Turismo. Anche questi fatti dimostrano che l’unione fa la forza e ,che quando si opera in armonia e tutti d’accordo ,nessun traguardo e’ irraggiungibile .

After having carefully examined the significant and very eloquent sixteen photos of protests, I want to make a small intervention.

It ‘s a winter of the late ’60, the final period of transition between the poor but stable economy of ” confinati ” and the most promising but still immature economy of tourism. And it was already in place the cultural revolution of ’68: less inhibitions and more liberalism.
I was not in Ustica, but the sounds of discontent came to Palermo and I remember this detail:

The protests drew national attention so that a crew of the national TV station went to Ustica (in those days there was only one channel RAI), and a sicilian radio station sent people too.For as we read from one of the placards displayed by the protesters in Ustica there was no the pharmacy anymore , but during the broadcast of the TV news Pharmacist Dr. Butturini from Verona witnessed a heartfelt appeal from Totuccio Caserta ( nicknamed Sigaro – Cigar ) ), was moved, packed his bags, came to Ustica, open a pharmacy and stayed there until the end of his days.

Transport was the main problem. Some billboards readthese requests: “Steamer faster and 2 times a day,” “links with Naples”, “Helicopters and hydrofoils daily. Hydrofoil in those days was just ” a talk ” but farsighted were the requests . Another sign says: “let us bury our dead,” and within a few years vaults were built on the south side of the cemetery. As you can see from the photos in the protest attended by all: men, women and youth. In those days there were no padded jackets to repair wind and cold like the present, all the people were wearing a jacket that really was not enough (even if under the shirt there were 2-3 mesh cotton or wool) ; People were suffering cold literally but the bodies were used and immunized.

In a sign reads: “we finished the port,” another “drive out the sparrows (affecting agriculture), and another:” solve the crisis forever, “and” we want more water ” , the protest protest was on many fronts.

The truth is that not everything was so easy and automatic as it might appear from this narrative, was a struggle, there were some minor skirmishes with the police and some Usticesi, following an inquiry by the Judiciary, had to be interrogated and were denounced (but eventually acquitted). It ‘s the price you pay for the social achievements!

One thing I remember very well was that people were united, was not a protest against the Local Autority but against the system that was ignoring the needs of the island-oriented tourism. Even these facts show that union means strength, and when you work in harmony and all agree, no goal ‘unreachable.
