Beautiful picture. The mother in the picture Marianna Pittari was born 1860 in Ustica. Her parents were Francesco Pittari and Maria Caserta. Francesco’s father was Antonio PIttari, born about 1804 in Ustica.
There is also a Guiseppe Pittari that married Anna Tauro in Ustica, date unknown.
The picture is from Claudia Aiaimo, Pittari, Wilson, in California. She would sure like to hear from anyone in Ustica or Palermo that is a part of this family.

COMMENTO

Dalla California Marlene Robershaw Manfrè

Pietro and Pina Bertucci, Salvatore and Maria Compagno paid a visit to the Island of Catalina, along with California Hosts, Ron and Marlene Robershaw (Manfre). We were greeted at the port of Catalina by friend of Marlene, Chuck Liddell. Chuck was there to take us on an Island Tour. Chuck is owner of Odyssey Charter Tours, also he owns Liddell Talent Management Co. where Marlene has had contact with many musicians for the Ramona Concert Association.

Catalina is very much like Ustica ,but twice as big and twice as many people. The Port and Island geography are very similar. On the Island tour we met up with a wild Buffalo and also saw an American Bald Eagle at a bird sanctuary. We visited the small airport that Chuck Liddell’s father had built before W.W. 11. We met with the City Manager and Chief Financial Officer to discuss the possibility of Catalina and Ustica being Sister City’s. The idea is being investigated.

In the pictures you will see many views of the beautiful Island, in the day and in the night. Like Ustica, the Island of Catalina lies 35 miles out to sea. Tourists are greeted with a lot of brochures at the dock and also a nearby Information Booth with someone there to answer questions and help.

The big round building is the historic Casino, no gambling, but where the Movie Stars and rich of the 30’s would come to dance with the Big Bands. The downstairs is a lovely theatre with movies.

We were all very interested in the colorful and quaint homes that line the streets of the main city, Avalon. There was a multitude of Italian Restaurants. The city celebrates their 100th anniversary this year.

Usticasape will be updating you on any progress for “Sister City.”

Ciao e Dio Benedica, Marlene Robershaw, Manfre

RISPOSTA

Da san Diego Risposta Marlene Robershaw Manfrè

Dear Gina[ id=17405 w=320 h=240 float=right]

So glad we will continue to have contact. The experience that Pietro from Ustica had on our stay at Catalina was very much a trip of experience and education for him. He saw many things your Island does that he would like to see carried out in Ustica. They are really the things that he has wanted seen done in his Island, but to convince others is sometimes hard. Now he has a good example to show them.

Some examples of the advantage of being Sister Cities is that on the island of Ustica, alot of things are done in the good, old-fashioned ways. These ways would be very educational for young people that might come on family exchanges where the students could stay with an Ustica family and learn the language each day and also see how these people live and work.
I think Ustica is almost like Catalina was in years gone by. less people, very few cars, alot of farming done by hand without the latest equipment, a beautiful breed of donkeys that are used for many helpful tasks.
Also want to repeat that besides the Marine Reserve designation there, part of the land is also a reserve. The archeological remains were found there long ago of a Bronze Village from the years 1500 B.C.Also, one of the mountains has the ruins of where the Romans lived and caves where the tombs of the Romans and were buried. There are many remains from the times of the Pirates in the 1700’s. And these periods are also represented in the depths of the ocean around the Island for the Divers.
So alot of the Island is under reserve protection, similar to Catalina Conservatory.
I could go on forever, here, but hoping any thing I share could be of a further help in the future.
I am always more than happy to help with this project. I am also an Italian citizen of Palermo, ( Ustica is in the Providencia di Palermo) I have now Duel Citizenship, being born in San diego of course.
And of course I would be available to do anything to help etc.
At your service, and many thanks for your time and efforts

Marlene Marchese Robershaw

——-

Cara Gina,

Marlene Marchese Robershaw

DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS TO USTICESI REUNION

May 18, Saturday, 11:00 to (whenever we all get tired of talking.)

Address: 3012 Via Viejas Oeste –Alpine Ca. 91901

Host: Bob and Sheri Grande – tel.619-659-0941

Tel.# for Marlene is 760-789-7474, during the party my cell number is 619-742-2033

You will probably look at Maps in Yahoo or Google, but I have included here a little more details, so you don’t get lost (like I do sometimes.)

In San Diego you take highway # 8 East – it goes thru El Cajon, then in 10 minutes, you are in Alpine. Take the Tavern Rd. exit, and go right. Now continue on this road, don’t turn left or right (the road does take sort of a curve early on) If you are going straight, you are on Tavern Rd.

The first road you pass is Alpine Blvd., then you will pass thru the Arnold intersection ( both of these have a stop light). Keep going, in about 10 minutes you come to a stop sign. This is S. Grade, take a left. Look for Via Viejas Oeste on the right ( about 3 minutes), it is a gated community.

There will be a guard at the gate, tell them you are going to the Grande Party. Their house is toward the end of the community, just keep going, check to see that you are still on Via Viejas O. and you will get there in about 5 minutes or so. The number is 3012.

Ci Vediamo !!!!! see you there !!! Marlene

Western Usticesi: Reunion planned in California.

FRED LAURICE (3)

Pietro Bertucci and his wife, Pina of Ustica and Rome, are visiting the U.S. in April and May. Pietro edits the daily Ustica blog at www.usticasape.it. You may already be aware of a reunion planned for them in New Orleans (LaFreniere Park) on April 6. Pietro and his wife want to travel west to meet again with us “Western Usticesi”. They would like to meet as many of us as possible … so the question is, where could we meet that would bring out the greatest number of people to greet them. The choices of location are: the San Diego area, the Orange County area and the Santa Monica area. In Northern California our choices are the Bay Area (probably Mt. View) and the Sacramento area. We would like to get a feel for about how many could attend, depending on the location. We don’t yet have a definite date in Mid May. Our reunions in San Diego and Mt. View two years ago during Pietro’s last visit were both extremely successful and a lot of fun! This is a great opportunity to learn first hand of “what’s new on Ustica!”

Please indicate your feelings on the following:

San Diego Area

___ Would definitely attend

___ Might attend

___ Definitely could not attend

Orange County Area

___ Would definitely attend

___ Might attend

___ Definitely could not attend

Santa Monica Area

___ Would definitely attend

___ Might attend

___ Definitely could not attend

San Francisco Bay Area

___ Would definitely attend

___ Might attend

___ Definitely could not attend

Your response in the next day or two will help us greatly with our planning. We’ll pass the results along to Pietro and Pina so that they can plan on meeting the greatest number of people.

Ciao!

Fred Lauricella
